Mooning the FCC

The Federal Communications Commission proposed a fine of $1.4 million against ABC TV and several of its affiliates for showing obscene material. According to FCC Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate:

Our action today should serve as a reminder to all broadcasters that Congress and American families continue to be concerned about protecting children from harmful material and that the FCC will enforce the laws of the land vigilantly.

The offense? Displaying a woman’s buttocks on NYPD Blue. There is nothing that puts our children in jeopardy more than seeing a naked ass, that’s for sure.

Of course, the FCC has just reproposed rules — rules already rejected by Americans a few years ago — to allow further media consolidation, putting our so-called free press into the hands of fewer and bigger corporations. Clearly, the FCC is not concerned about the diversity of views on TV, just that we don’t see a naked ass.

I say, let’s all drop our drawers and give the FCC one big, collective mooning.
