The Spitzer Fiasco

There are so many levels on which to comment about the Spitzer-prostitution scandal that I’m not even sure where to begin. I’ll start small and work my way up.

  1. While it may be distasteful, prostitution should not be a crime. What two consenting adults agree to do in private is their business, even if one is paying the other for sex. Prostitution is going to happen whether legal or not. It should be regulated for the safety of the public and for the prostitutes themselves.
  2. Spitzer is clearly guilty of hypocrisy.
  3. A man should not bring this kind of shame into his household.
  4. Spitzer knew that should his transactions with a prostitution ring become public, he would ruin his chances to effect the policies he claims to feel so strongly about. The greatest crime committed here is that he put his own appetites above the hopes and needs of his constituents or those in his party who put their own reputations on the line to help bring him to power.
  5. Why the hell is the FBI wasting its precious resources investigating this in the first place? This raises many questions about whether Spitzer might have been a political target of the already politicized Justice Department.
  6. Next time, Spitzer should just fuck himself.
