Anyone who doubts that the Bush administration had a jones for going to war against Iraq, and then paved the way for that war with lie after lie should — well, first they should pull their heads out of their asses — but then they should read this from the McClatchy news team.
McClatchy (then Knight-Ridder) was virtually the only news organization willing to question the White House during the months before the invasion. This brief blog posting gives the lie to all the sanctimonious network newsmen who claim to have done their jobs at that time. Charlie Gibson of ABC News even made this remarkable statement:
It was just a drumbeat of support from the administration. And it is not our job to debate them; it’s our job to ask the questions.
Huh? What? In Gibson’s world, even an eight year old would be qualified to be a journalist, because all you need to do is ask questions. Never mind finding answers or reporting on the accuracy of the responses you receive to those questions. Fortunately, there are a few real reporters left. Just check out McClatchy.
