Mount Independence is a Vermont state historic site in Orwell. It is the location of a major Revolutionary War fortification, one that played a key role in preserving the fledgling United States of America in the second year of the revolt against Britain. Today, a number of trails wind around the lovely ground of the 300-plus acre peninsula on Lake Champlain.
On Sunday, August 4, I am leading a “Hike Into History” at the Mount. We’ll meet at the visitor center at 2:00 pm. My walks are tailored to the interests of the group and usually last two or three hours, though I make them work for people who need to stop sooner too. And come a little early or plan to stay a little later, so you can poke around the visitor center museum.
